About Us

TheBuilder.nyc is business guidance, support, inspiration and accountability by New York City construction executive Reed MacNaughton. Reed personally acts as a Leadership Team Coach NYC in the company.

Specializing in contracting and skilled trades, TheBuilder.nyc works with direct-to-customer construction services that remodel and repair the homes, stores and restaurants of NYC through a weekly meeting with a Leadership Team Coach NYC. There can be only one market leader for each service in The City, and TheBuilder.nyc is solely focused on dominating that space. We only work with teams who aspire to be the Greatest at Their Trade in the Greatest City in the World.

Reed is personally passionate about the state of the construction industry; where it is today and what it could be. There’s power in an honest day’s work and pride in a tangible end result. Service providers fix things that are broken and build things that never existed. It’s an industry that is imperative to our way of life, but an industry that is in peril of losing its quality people. Good companies are laying the groundwork now for the labor needs of the future; their future depends on it.

If the future of the construction industry is the superstructure of the American economy, then small business is the scaffolding of the construction industry. Entrepreneurs, partnerships and family outfits comprise the many trades that make this city run. Renovators, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, heating and cooling, kitchen exhaust, refrigeration, etc, are essential to the people of New York, and these are all businesses that strive to provide high quality service to their clients and high quality jobs to their teams. It’s no exaggeration to say that the greatest thing a community can do to improve their way of life is to support and grow their small businesses which is exactly what out Leadership Team Coach NYC program does. These communities, built on great business, are the fabric that holds together a great nation.

Those small businesses have earned the right to take the next step; the right to take on great work, the right to grow their exceptional team, and the right to earn a healthy profit. TheBuilder.nyc knows the path and is proud to be a guide.

How is that the case?

Reed MacNaughton has experience today, and is continuing to gain it daily. As the director of business operations for COCOZZA Restaurant & Retail, Reed and his team have built over 100 restaurants in New York City and are adding new, memorable names to their roster every month. COCOZZA itself is a model for growth as it has gained notoriety over the last ten years by going from a small shop that bid on quick service restaurant chains to being a major player in the industry – building out 150 seat, michelin-starred, fine dining establishments and 10,000 square foot event spaces and breweries.

Prior to working with COCOZZA, Reed started a home services company from scratch, which, after four years, was purchased by that company’s leadership team and still operates today. Now called Fogarty’s Home Services, Reed’s team performed complex and physically exhausting air sealing and insulation services in the Hartford area. Very different from general contracting, this company kept a warehouse of inventory, a fleet of trucks, and a team of technicians doing dirty work inside clean houses, but still managing to deliver happy customers at a break-neck rate of speed. Through a series of systems and processes, fueled by a bonus incentive program, the front line team was able to earn well over the area median income and provide a great life for their families.

Why was Reed able to start his own business as a Leadership Team Coach NYC?

Great mentorship and a quality education. Reed is the son of a home builder, so he knew how to build, but he didn’t necessarily know business. After graduating with a Civil Engineering degree from Union College, he knew structures and went into that field, but business school opened his eyes to the fields of Finance, Marketing and Organizational Behavior. Reed earned his MBA in 2012 from the University of Florida and has been referencing his class notes ever since. However, an education doesn’t end at commencement – that is, by definition, only the beginning. Reed has been obsessed with business processes ever since and brings his passion to every meeting as a Leadership Team Coach NYC. He has modeled his companies after the best companies in his industry, as well as many others. Working with restaurants has been an inspiration when it comes to hospitality; his construction service companies are customer service companies that happen to perform construction. He knows all the popular business systems and uses them daily – whether it’s Scaling Up, Traction, E-Myth, the Great Game of Business, the 4 Disciplines of Execution, their derivatives and their imitators – these systems are the foundation for TheBuilder.nyc program.

But there is no better education than the school of hard knocks and proper mentorship. MacNaughton Builders is a custom home builder in Hartford, and the place where Reed learned his trade. As many small businesses know, family business is hard! Reed worked with his father and mother for ten years, and truly understands the family dynamic. The relationships and the business are both of critical importance, and they can sometimes be in conflict with each other. It’s never anything that is fun, but it is something that’s common, and when it’s handled correctly, can end up making both stronger. Family business is almost synonymous with small business. Many ‘main street’ companies are in their second, if not third generation. Succession planning, leadership skills training, departmental ownership and many other strategies have to be considered when deciding what is best for the company, and what is best for the family. Working with a Leadership Team Coach NYC who has been there before, and can guide you through the hard times, provides clear direction and experience when emotion might often be the leading decision maker.

When businesses grow, their people flourish. Families are stronger and communities are better. TheBuilder.nyc takes pride in facilitating that growth for construction service firms in New York City. They don’t work with competing trades, so their only objective is to make each of their trades the best in their category. The best to their clients, the best to their people and inevitably, the best for their owners.
